A major political movement in Sokoto State has officially announced its defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.
The decision was made public on Wednesday, December 17, after an extensive consultative meeting involving elders and leaders of the movement representing all 23 local government areas of Sokoto State. The gathering focused on evaluating the group’s political future and assessing current developments within the state.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, the chairman of the movement, Professor Hamza Maishanu, said the decision was reached after wide-ranging discussions and consultations at various levels. He noted that the move reflected the collective position of members across the state, rather than the opinion of a select few.
According to Maishanu, the elders and leaders of the movement carefully examined the prevailing political environment before agreeing to withdraw from the PDP and realign with the APC. He explained that the performance of the current Sokoto State administration played a key role in shaping their decision.
The chairman disclosed that members were encouraged by the policies and governance approach of Governor Ahmed Aliyu, which they believe have contributed positively to the development of the state. He added that the cordial relationship between Governor Aliyu and former Sokoto State governor, Attahiru Bafarawa, also influenced the group’s decision to support the present administration.
Maishanu emphasized that the realignment was undertaken in good faith and in the overall interest of the movement’s members. He dismissed claims that the defection was motivated by political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections or driven by pressure from external forces.
He further stressed that the decision to join the APC was deliberate and well-structured, adding that additional consultations would be carried out to finalize all procedural requirements necessary to complete the defection process.
Meanwhile, former Sokoto State governor, Attahiru Bafarawa, clarified that he has remained retired from active politics and has not personally joined the APC. However, he expressed support for the decision taken by his followers, noting that they are entitled to make political choices they believe best serve their interests.
The development is expected to have notable implications for political alignments in Sokoto State, as the movement prepares to formally integrate into its new political platform.
