The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Vice Chairman (Central) in Lagos State, Hakeem Olalemi, has attributed Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s recent move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to a quest for personal political security rather than any internal problems within the PDP.
Speaking to journalists in Lagos on Wednesday, Olalemi rejected suggestions that Fubara’s defection was triggered by the longstanding disagreements within the party. According to him, the Rivers governor acted purely out of self-interest and not because of factional disputes in the PDP.
Olalemi emphasized that every politician is free to associate with any party they choose, noting that Fubara’s decision reflects his belief that aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s APC would offer him the protection he desires.
“Governor Fubara made a personal political choice,” he said. “He believes President Tinubu is better positioned to shield him from the political battles he has been fighting. His challenges are unique to him and did not originate from any conflict within the PDP.”
Expanding on this, Olalemi argued that the issues rocking the PDP stem from certain individuals refusing to respect internal procedures and constitutional guidelines. He insisted that many of the party’s current difficulties would not exist if members adhered strictly to both the PDP constitution and the Nigerian constitution.
“Some people prefer shortcuts instead of due process,” he said. “That attitude is holding the party back, but we are confident the PDP will regain stability and return to its rightful place.”
When asked whether the party would feel Fubara’s absence, Olalemi responded bluntly, saying the governor had been largely detached from PDP activities for nearly two years.
“He has not been active in our programs or contributed significantly to party growth since assuming office,” Olalemi stated. “While losing any member is not ideal, the truth is that his departure will not create a vacuum.”
Despite his critical remarks, Olalemi concluded on a conciliatory note, wishing the Rivers governor well as he begins a new political chapter in the APC.
