The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is increasingly uneasy about his political standing, particularly his relationship with President Bola Tinubu and his waning influence in Rivers State.
In a statement released on Monday by the party’s spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, the PDP claimed that Wike’s recent public remarks revealed deep-seated fears over declining relevance and authority. Ememobong was reacting to comments made by the former Rivers State governor during his end-of-year media interaction.
According to the PDP, Wike’s appearance and utterances during the interview suggested anxiety about losing presidential favour, diminishing control over Rivers State politics, and frustration with what the party described as the firm and principled leadership of the PDP at the national level.
“Throughout the interview, Minister Wike displayed clear signs of apprehension—fear of losing the President’s attention, concern over his weakening hold on Rivers State, and irritation at the resolute posture of the PDP’s national leadership,” the statement said.
The party’s reaction comes amid recent political developments in Rivers State, following the defection of Governor Siminalayi Fubara from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier this month. The PDP claimed that Wike made unsuccessful efforts to block the governor’s defection, a move that has reportedly shifted the political structure in Rivers—once firmly under Wike’s control—into the APC’s camp.
Ememobong further accused Wike of engaging in blatant anti-party activities by openly declaring loyalty to President Tinubu while still insisting he remains a member of the PDP. He argued that such conduct undermines party discipline and validates the disciplinary measures earlier taken against the minister.
According to the PDP spokesperson, Wike’s actions are inconsistent with democratic values, party loyalty, and internal cohesion. He also accused the FCT minister of repeatedly fueling internal crises within the PDP as a strategy to promote his personal political ambitions.
“Since assuming office as governor of Rivers State in 2015, Wike has consistently positioned himself as a destabilizing force within the PDP’s leadership structure,” Ememobong said.
He went on to outline what he described as Wike’s involvement in a series of leadership conflicts within the party. These include his role in the removal of former national chairman Ali Modu Sheriff, his later opposition to Uche Secondus after initially supporting his emergence, and his backing of Iyorchia Ayu for the national chairmanship before subsequently leading campaigns for Ayu’s removal.
Ememobong concluded that Wike’s political approach is rooted in sustained conflict and calculated disruption, arguing that he thrives on controversy and attention. “His brand of politics feeds on perpetual tension. When denied the spotlight, he resorts to actions that threaten unity and stability,” he said.
The PDP maintained that the cumulative impact of Wike’s conduct has been the deliberate creation of division and discord within the party, often deployed as leverage to pursue narrow political objectives at the expense of collective interests.
