The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has rejected claims that his recent visit to the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was driven by political interests, insisting that the engagement was purely aimed at promoting dialogue, peace, and stability.
Governor Otti made this clarification on Friday while receiving members of the Abia Diaspora Commission alongside the medical team of the Abia Global Medical Mission 2025 at the Government House in Umuahia. His comments followed a viral video on social media in which an individual criticised the governor’s visit to Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, alleging political motives behind the action.
Responding to the criticism, Otti explained that differing views are normal in a democratic society and should not be misinterpreted as hostility or opposition. He stressed that his decision to visit Kanu was guided by the need for constructive engagement rather than any personal or political ambition.
The governor also addressed speculation about his plans after completing his tenure, firmly stating that he has no intention of seeking any elective office in the future. According to him, his focus remains on fulfilling the mandate given to him by the people of Abia State.
He reiterated that he has no ambition to contest for the presidency, vice presidency, or a senatorial seat after leaving office, adding that leadership should create opportunities for younger generations to contribute to national development.
Otti dismissed suggestions that his actions were connected to discussions about an “Igbo presidency,” describing such claims as baseless. He maintained that his name would not appear on any future ballot, though younger Nigerians, including the children of today’s leaders, remain free to pursue political aspirations.
Speaking further on the issue of Nnamdi Kanu, the governor revealed that his engagement did not begin recently, but rather forms part of ongoing efforts initiated at the highest levels over the past two years. He noted that his decision to visit Kanu was appropriate, given that the IPOB leader hails from Abia State, specifically Umuahia North Local Government Area.
Otti, however, cautioned against disclosing sensitive details that could undermine ongoing discussions. He reaffirmed his long-standing opposition to violent agitation and military approaches to civil disputes, recalling his criticism of past military operations such as Operation Python Dance.
While acknowledging that Kanu’s case is currently before the courts, the governor pointed out that legal processes can coexist with administrative and diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation. He clarified that seeking dialogue does not amount to supporting secession or undermining the judiciary.
According to Otti, conflicts are best resolved through negotiation rather than confrontation, noting that history has shown that wars ultimately end at the negotiating table. He described himself as a strong advocate of dialogue, emphasising that peace should always be prioritised over violence.
On the broader security situation, the governor expressed concern about rising insecurity across parts of the country, warning that criminal elements often exploit tense conditions to attack innocent citizens. He assured residents that his administration remains committed to maintaining peace and order in Abia State.
Otti stressed that while the government is open to dialogue, it will not tolerate acts of violence. He assured that anyone who attempts to disrupt peace in the state will be firmly confronted, while the government continues to act responsibly and within the law.
Concluding his remarks, the governor underscored the importance of peace to economic growth, business development, and the overall wellbeing of residents. He called on stakeholders to support peaceful, dialogue-based solutions, noting that sustained development in Abia State depends on a secure and stable environment.
