Adams Oshiomhole, the senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, has called for the strictest possible punishment for terrorists, insisting that those found guilty of murder and other serious crimes should face the death penalty.
Oshiomhole made his position known during a Senate debate on the proposed amendment to the 2022 Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, which seeks to extend capital punishment to kidnappers. The former governor of Edo State expressed strong opposition to current deradicalization programs, arguing that such initiatives have failed to prevent recidivism among convicted terrorists.
He noted that previous attempts to rehabilitate terrorists, funded by public resources, often resulted in offenders returning to violent activities. “In the past, individuals who committed horrific crimes were apprehended and subjected to deradicalization programs, only for some to return to terrorism,” Oshiomhole said.
Highlighting the severity of the crimes, he added, “We cannot continue to spend vast sums of money capturing individuals who have killed innocent people, buried children alive, and committed other heinous acts, only for some to escape full justice under various legal pretexts. Those who commit such atrocities must face trial, and if found guilty, the punishment must be death.”
Oshiomhole also drew on moral and religious principles to support his stance, emphasizing that the right to life does not extend to murderers. He concluded firmly: “No more deradicalization. Those caught committing grave crimes will face the ultimate legal consequence death if convicted.”
