The Nigerian Senate has given its approval for the appointment of 67 ambassadors, comprising both career and non-career nominees, following a confirmation exercise held during plenary on Thursday.
According to reports, the lawmakers confirmed 34 career diplomats alongside 30 non-career ambassadors after reviewing their nominations. This move forms part of the federal government’s effort to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic representation across the globe.
Among those confirmed as career ambassadors are Arewa Esther from Oyo State, Adeola-Ibrahim Mopelola of Ogun State, Ramat Omonbolale from Lagos State, Monica Okechukwu Enebechi of Anambra State, Adams Jane Basset from Cross River State, Mohammed Lele from Bauchi State, and Muhammad Dahiru representing Kaduna State. These individuals are expected to bring their professional experience in diplomacy and public service to their new roles.
The list of non-career ambassadors includes Ajimobi Florence and Sulola Akande, both from Oyo State; Ifeanyi Uguwanyi of Enugu State; Ita Enang from Akwa Ibom State; Femi Fani-Kayode of Osun State; Jerry Manwe from Taraba State; Reno Omokri of Delta State; Ibas Ibok-Ette from Cross River State; Abdulrahman Dambazzau from Kano State; and Abas Braimah of Edo State, among others. These nominees are largely political appointees expected to represent Nigeria’s interests in various international postings.
Prior to this latest confirmation, the Senate had earlier approved three additional non-career ambassadors. With the most recent exercise, the total number of ambassadorial nominees confirmed by the upper legislative chamber now stands at 67, marking a significant step toward filling vacant diplomatic positions and enhancing Nigeria’s foreign relations.
