Team Nigeria has made history, storming to a spectacular victory at the first-ever West Africa Para Games in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Over six days of fierce competition, Nigerian athletes thrilled fans and left their rivals trailing, emerging as the undeniable leaders of the Games.
When the dust settled on Wednesday night, Nigeria had amassed an astounding 129 medals—59 gold, 39 silver, and 31 bronze—far ahead of other competing nations.
The Benin Republic finished second with four golds, four silvers, and 14 bronzes, while Ghana took third with three golds, 15 silvers, and 21 bronzes. Cameroon and the Ivory Coast rounded out the top five.
The crowning moment for Team Nigeria came in the Amputee Football final, where they edged Liberia 1-0 during the closing ceremony. The victory symbolized a week of remarkable performances across multiple sports, showcasing the talent, grit, and determination of Nigerian Para athletes.
Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, praised the athletes’ achievements:
“This is history in the making. The over 400 Para athletes from across West Africa are the true heroes of African sports. Ogun State deserves immense credit for supporting the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy.”
NSC Director General Bukola Olopade described Team Nigeria’s performances as “heroic” and highlighted the broader impact of the Games on disability sports. “These Games have brought Para sports into the spotlight, inspiring people living with disabilities. The NSC is more committed than ever to hosting international Para competitions to build on this success,” Olopade said.
Sunday Odebode, President of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria, expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for supporting inclusion through the National Sports Commission. He also praised the leadership of Dikko and Olopade as transformative for Para sports in Nigeria.
Thanks to the meticulous organization by the Local Organising Committee, led by Victor Achakpo, the Games ran smoothly and highlighted West Africa’s immense Para talent.
With this landmark triumph, Nigeria has not only cemented its dominance in West African Para sports but also inspired a new era of hope, achievement, and inclusivity for athletes with disabilities.
