A 64-year-old New Jersey man known for playing Santa Claus at community, corporate, and private holiday events has been arrested on multiple child-exploitation charges, igniting widespread alarm due to his frequent and direct contact with children.
The suspect, identified as Mark Paulino of Hamilton Township, was arrested on Monday and now faces charges related to the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse materials, as well as endangering the welfare of a child. The disturbing development was reported on Tuesday by the Daily Star.
Case Triggered by Cyber Alert
According to Mercer County authorities, the investigation began on December 4, 2025, after detectives received a cyber alert flagging the upload of child pornography from a residence in Hamilton Township. The digital trail led investigators to Paulino, a retired elementary school teacher who maintained an online profile describing his career in education.
As detectives looked deeper, they discovered that Paulino had recently been working as a “Santa for hire,” appearing at numerous seasonal events where he interacted closely with children—posing for photos, participating in holiday activities, and engaging in one-on-one conversations typical of festive Santa meet-and-greet settings.
Authorities Express Serious Concerns
Given Paulino’s role and the nature of the allegations, officials said the situation posed immediate risks.
“Because this role involved direct, repeated contact with children, detectives worked around the clock to secure a search warrant,” authorities explained.
On December 5, investigators executed the warrant at Paulino’s home, seizing several items described as “evidentiary.” He was arrested without resistance shortly afterward.
Prosecution Seeks Continued Detention
Following the arrest, prosecutors quickly filed a motion requesting that Paulino remain in custody while awaiting trial, citing the severity of the allegations and the potential danger to the community.
The investigation is still active, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. Officials specifically encouraged parents, guardians, and event organizers who hired Paulino in his Santa role to report any concerns or observations that may assist in the case.
Community Shocked
Residents of Hamilton Township and surrounding areas have expressed shock, noting that Paulino’s long-standing involvement in school systems and holiday events had placed him in trusted positions within the community. The revelation has prompted renewed calls for stricter background checks for individuals working in roles that involve unsupervised access to children.
The case continues to unfold as investigators work to determine the full scope of Paulino’s activities and whether additional victims or witnesses may exist.
