The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for a comprehensive investigation into serious corruption allegations leveled against the former Managing Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Ahmed Farouk, despite his recent resignation from office.
Reports indicate that Farouk stepped down following claims made by Africa’s richest businessman, Aliko Dangote, who accused him of financial misconduct and actions amounting to economic sabotage. According to Dangote, Farouk allegedly used millions of dollars in public funds to finance the secondary school education of his children in Switzerland—an accusation that has since sparked widespread public concern and debate.
Farouk reportedly submitted his resignation after a brief meeting with President Bola Tinubu, a move that many Nigerians interpreted as a response to the mounting pressure surrounding the allegations. However, the NBA has emphasized that resignation alone should not put an end to scrutiny or accountability.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, stressed the importance of a transparent and independent investigation. He noted that without a proper probe, the allegations could either unjustly tarnish Farouk’s reputation or be perceived as a convenient excuse to remove him from office without due process.
The NBA president explained that the situation has become deeply troubling for both public officials and the government, given the gravity of the claims and the public interest involved. He referenced the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which has reportedly indicated its intention to investigate the matter.
Maikyau maintained that fairness demands neutrality until the facts are fully established. He said a thorough investigation would either clear Farouk of wrongdoing or confirm the allegations, thereby reinforcing public confidence in governance and the rule of law.
According to him, allowing the matter to fade away without proper inquiry would set a dangerous precedent and undermine accountability in public service. He concluded that only a credible investigation can ensure justice is served and reassure Nigerians that corruption allegations are handled transparently, regardless of the individuals involved.
