Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has been conferred with a revered traditional title by the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, in a culturally significant ceremony held in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The installation took place on Monday, December 15, at the historic palace square, where President Mahama was officially named the Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source. The colourful event, rich in Yoruba tradition and symbolism, was marked by elaborate rites, tight security, and an impressive turnout of dignitaries from Nigeria, Ghana, and other parts of Africa.
The chieftaincy title, deeply rooted in Yoruba heritage, is interpreted as “a leader who restructures the global space for the benefit of humanity” or “a president who reorders the world for the common good.” It is a rare honour bestowed on individuals recognized for exceptional leadership, vision, and service beyond their national borders.
President Mahama’s recognition reflects his influence in African politics, his record in governance, and his consistent advocacy for global collaboration, equity, and sustainable development. The honour also highlights the enduring cultural and diplomatic ties between Ghana and the Yoruba people of southwestern Nigeria.
The ceremony attracted several prominent personalities, including Africa’s foremost industrialist Aliko Dangote; the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero; former President of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi; the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Clement Haastrup; the Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Oloyede Esuwoye; as well as traditional rulers from Ghana and other invited guests.
President Mahama made a grand arrival at about 1:30 p.m., riding in a ceremonial, royal-style motorized chariot, a moment that drew cheers and admiration from attendees.
In his remarks, the Ooni of Ife described President Mahama as a visionary reformer and a strong proponent of African unity. He commended Mahama’s dedication to multilateralism and his efforts toward fostering cooperation among nations, noting that the title was a reflection of his enduring contributions to the continent and the global community.
The event not only celebrated President Mahama’s achievements but also reinforced the role of traditional institutions in promoting unity, diplomacy, and shared values across Africa.
