Four Killed, Eleven Injured in Tragic Road Crash on Lokoja–Ajaokuta Highway

At least four people have been confirmed dead following a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on Sunday along the Lokoja–Ajaokuta highway in Kogi State. The crash, described as tragic and avoidable, also left 11 other passengers with varying degrees of injuries.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident on Monday. In a statement released to journalists, the Kogi State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Tenimu Etuku, said the accident happened at Jimgbe community, located within Ajaokuta Local Government Area of the state.

According to Etuku, the crash involved an 18-seater Toyota commercial bus that was traveling from Enugu to Abuja. He explained that the bus driver attempted to evade a potential head-on collision with an oncoming truck but, in the process, collided with another truck that had broken down and was parked on the roadway.

FRSC operatives swiftly responded to the scene, rescuing the injured passengers and transporting them to the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, where they are currently receiving medical treatment. The bodies of the four victims who lost their lives were also taken to the hospital’s morgue.

Providing further details, the sector commander identified the bus as bearing Abuja registration number ABC 232 XA. He described the incident as deeply regrettable and emphasized the importance of alertness and caution while driving, particularly on major highways.

Etuku cautioned motorists against complacency on seemingly free roads, stressing that an open road does not necessarily guarantee safety. He urged drivers to remain vigilant at all times, observe traffic rules, and anticipate possible hazards in order to prevent avoidable road tragedies.
