The Federal Government has expressed deep relief and happiness following the successful rescue of pupils and staff abducted from St. Mary’s Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Niger State, describing the development as a reassuring and hopeful way to close the year.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, welcomed the news of the rescue and applauded the dedication and professionalism of Nigeria’s security agencies. He said the operation demonstrated the government’s firm commitment to safeguarding the lives of citizens, especially vulnerable children.
According to the minister, all those taken during the attack on the school have now been freed, confirming that no pupil remains in the custody of the abductors. He disclosed that the release of the final group of 130 pupils and staff brings the total number of rescued victims to 230.
“The successful rescue of the remaining 130 children and staff of St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, Niger State, marks a truly fitting end to the year,” Idris said. “The Federal Government can now confirm that every one of the 230 abducted pupils has regained freedom. Not a single child is left behind.”
He further explained that the recently freed pupils would be formally handed over to the Niger State Government before being reunited with their families. The minister extended warm seasonal greetings to the parents and guardians, expressing hope that the reunion would bring healing after weeks of fear and uncertainty.
Describing the rescue as a courageous and commendable effort, Idris said the operation reinforces the nation’s resolve to confront insecurity and protect innocent lives. He acknowledged the emotional trauma experienced by the families and assured them of the government’s empathy and support.
“The Federal Government stands in solidarity with the parents and guardians who endured this painful ordeal,” he said. “We wish them peaceful family reunions, emotional healing, compliments of the season, and a Merry Christmas.”
Earlier, the Presidency had also confirmed the rescue, noting that the operation was carried out through coordinated military action supported by credible intelligence. The disclosure was made by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Onanuga stated that the students of St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, were released on Sunday, November 21, and were expected to arrive in Minna the following day to be reunited with their families.
The successful operation has been widely seen as a significant morale boost for both affected families and the wider public, highlighting ongoing efforts by the government and security agencies to combat banditry and ensure the safety of schools across the country.
