The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched a comprehensive security operation across Abuja, deploying no fewer than 2,202 police officers to ensure the safety of residents and visitors throughout the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The large-scale deployment follows a directive from the Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, who ordered heightened security measures at places of worship and other high-traffic locations as part of the command’s 2025 festive season operational plan. The initiative is aimed at preventing crime, maintaining public order, and guaranteeing a peaceful end-of-year celebration in the nation’s capital.
In a statement released on Thursday, the FCT Police Command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, said officers have been strategically positioned across key locations within the territory. These include churches, mosques, recreational and event centres, major highways, motor parks, markets, and other crowded public spaces where large gatherings are expected during the festive period.
“As we gradually transition into 2026, the FCT Police Command remains resolute in its commitment to sustaining peace, safety, and public order across the Territory,” the statement said. “In line with this mandate, 2,202 personnel have been deployed under the 2025 festive season operational order to ensure a peaceful, secure, and seamless celebration for residents and visitors alike.”
Adeh explained that the deployment is supported by enhanced visibility policing, intelligence-driven patrols, and round-the-clock monitoring of sensitive areas. She added that both vehicular and foot patrols have been intensified to deter criminal activities and ensure swift response to emergencies.
The police command also confirmed that areas identified as crime-prone—including known black spots, uncompleted buildings, and shanties that could be exploited by criminal elements—are under close surveillance. Where necessary, such locations are being raided as a preventive measure to disrupt criminal hideouts and protect the public.
“Identified black spots, uncompleted buildings, and shanties that may be exploited by criminal elements are being closely monitored and, where required, raided to forestall criminal activities,” Adeh said. “Tactical units, rapid response teams, and patrol squads are fully engaged across the FCT.”
To strengthen the operation, the command is collaborating closely with other security agencies to ensure coordinated and comprehensive security coverage throughout the festive season. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units have also been deployed to carry out routine security sweeps at places of worship and major event venues, in compliance with directives from the Inspector-General of Police.
Commissioner of Police Miller Dantawaye urged residents to remain vigilant, comply with the law, and cooperate with security personnel. He also encouraged the public to promptly report suspicious activities or emergencies to the nearest police station or through the FCT Police Command’s emergency communication lines.
Security challenges typically increase during the festive season due to heightened travel, commercial activity, and large public gatherings. The FCT Police Command assured residents that the proactive measures in place are designed to deter crime and ensure that the holiday season is celebrated in a safe and peaceful environment across Abuja.
