The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old man, Ahmed Abubakar, for allegedly attempting to procure ammunition intended for criminal gangs operating in Zamfara State.
Intelligence reports obtained by security analyst Zagazola Makama revealed that Abubakar, a native of Gusau and resident of Anguwan Dodo in Gwagwalada, Abuja, was apprehended on December 7, 2025, at around 3:30 p.m. by officers from the Mabushi Division of the FCT Police.
Security sources disclosed that Abubakar had approached a Nigerian Army corporal, Yusuf Mohammed, seeking to purchase 1,000 rounds of live ammunition. According to the reports, Abubakar intended to deliver the bullets to bandit groups in Zamfara in exchange for cash.
During preliminary questioning, the suspect allegedly admitted that he was acting on instructions from his uncle, Ahmed Yakubu, who is currently on the run and being pursued by authorities. Police also recovered ₦170,100 from Abubakar, believed to be part of the funds earmarked for the illicit arms transaction.
The FCT Police Command confirmed that Abubakar remains in custody, assisting investigators with ongoing inquiries. A manhunt has been launched for his uncle and any other potential collaborators connected to the scheme.
The case highlights the persistent challenges posed by illegal arms trafficking in Nigeria, particularly in regions plagued by banditry, and underscores the critical role of intelligence-led policing in preventing such threats to national security.
