The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the official squad numbers for the Super Eagles of Nigeria ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be hosted in Morocco. The release marks another key step in Nigeria’s preparations as the team looks to make a strong impression on the continental stage.
Star striker Victor Osimhen will once again lead the attack wearing his trademark number 9 jersey, a shirt he has made his own through consistent performances for both club and country. Newly appointed captain Wilfred Ndidi will continue with the number 4 shirt, reflecting his central role as a leader and midfield anchor for the national team.
Midfield creativity will be driven by Lazio star Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who has been handed the prestigious number 10 jersey. Other established members of the squad will also retain their familiar numbers, with Ademola Lookman wearing number 7, Samuel Chukwueze donning number 11, and Frank Onyeka continuing with number 8.
CAF’s list also confirms squad numbers for new faces in the team. Salim Fago, Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, Ryan Alebiosu, and Tochukwu Nnadi have been assigned numbers 25, 26, 27, and 28 respectively, signalling their official inclusion in Nigeria’s AFCON campaign.
The Super Eagles are chasing a fourth AFCON title and will begin their tournament journey against Tanzania’s Taifa Stars in Fès next Tuesday. The opening match is expected to test Nigeria’s readiness and set the tone for the rest of the competition.
Ahead of the tournament, defender Calvin Bassey voiced strong belief in the team’s ability to compete for the title. Speaking on Fulham TV, Bassey highlighted the growth and experience within the squad, noting that many players have matured since the last AFCON.
Bassey was part of the Nigerian side that narrowly lost 2–1 to host nation Côte d’Ivoire in the previous edition’s final. The upcoming tournament will be his second appearance at a major international competition for Nigeria, and he is expected to play a key role in defence.
With former captain William Troost-Ekong no longer in the squad, Bassey is likely to form a solid defensive partnership with Semi Ajayi. Under head coach Finidi George’s successor, the Super Eagles’ backline is expected to be built around discipline, strength, and experience as Nigeria pushes for continental glory in Morocco.
