Former presidential aide to the late Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has weighed in on the political climate ahead of the 2027 elections, expressing the view that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, is fundamentally a good individual whose political aspirations are being hindered by the behaviour of some of his supporters.
Ahmad shared this opinion on Thursday through a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account. In his message, he urged Obi to reconsider his 2027 presidential ambition and instead align himself with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he believes should be allowed to complete two consecutive terms.
According to Ahmad, Obi’s personal qualities are not in doubt; however, he argued that those around the former Anambra governor may be contributing negatively to his political trajectory.
He wrote: “Peter is a good person, but the people around him will never allow him to achieve his dream.”
Expanding on his point, Ahmad appealed directly to Obi’s supporters, asking them to encourage their candidate to make what he described as a strategic sacrifice. He suggested that Obi step aside for the time being and work with the current administration, claiming such a move could position him more favourably in the future.
In his words:
“If you genuinely want him to succeed, advise him to sacrifice today so that others can sacrifice for him tomorrow. Tell him to come and join us; let President Tinubu complete his mandate in 2031, and then the future remains open for everyone.”
Ahmad also criticised the conduct of some online supporters of the Labour Party, claiming that the type of content they circulate reflects poorly on Obi’s political image. He implied that if their public posts are already “reckless,” their private conversations with their candidate may be even more damaging.
“With this reckless content you post publicly, one can only imagine the kind of things you tell him privately,” he added.
His remarks surface amid ongoing speculation that key opposition figures—particularly former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi—are exploring the possibility of forming a coalition to challenge President Tinubu in the 2027 elections. Conversations about mergers and alliances have intensified within opposition circles, signalling what could become a major political realignment ahead of the next general election.
