The All Progressives Congress (APC) is on the verge of expanding its political dominance as Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, prepares to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the ruling party. His anticipated defection is expected to raise the APC’s number of serving governors to 26, marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to insiders within the APC National Working Committee (NWC), Governor Mutfwang has already concluded internal consultations and reached an understanding with the party’s national leadership. The source disclosed that the Plateau State governor recently held a private meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, signaling that his move is all but finalized.
The NWC insider further revealed that Governor Mutfwang contacted the APC National Chairman last week to formally communicate his intention to exit the PDP. Despite previously affirming loyalty to the opposition party, the governor is said to have reassessed his political future amid the PDP’s internal divisions.
“Last Tuesday, he informed the chairman that he was ready to switch parties. By Sunday, the chairman had arranged for him to meet with the president,” the source said, noting that the meeting took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. This development reportedly ended widespread speculation that the defection was being stalled or opposed by the APC chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda—Mutfwang’s main challenger in the last gubernatorial race.
Another senior APC official explained that the chairman personally facilitated the governor’s visit to Aso Rock, dispelling earlier rumours of friction between the two Plateau politicians.
“After he told the chairman he wanted to join the APC, he was taken to the Villa to see the president. His official reception into the party will happen soon,” the member of the NWC confirmed.
Beyond Plateau State, the APC is also counting Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, among its incoming members. Although his formal defection event was postponed, the ruling party now regards him as being aligned with their fold. Party insiders say the delay in the Taraba governor’s official reception was due to his desire to avoid political tension during a sensitive national period.
“With Kefas already relating with the APC as one of ours, the party now effectively has 26 governors,” the source said, emphasizing that the political center of gravity continues to tilt in favor of the ruling party.
Governor Mutfwang’s expected move—paired with Governor Kefas’s quiet alignment—marks yet another wave of realignments within Nigeria’s political arena, with the APC strengthening its standing nationwide. As the 2027 election cycle edges closer, observers believe these defections may reshape the balance of power and deepen the ruling party’s influence across key states.
