The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has firmly denied reports circulating on social media and online platforms alleging that he collapsed and was flown out of the country for emergency medical treatment.
Reacting to the claims on Monday, Kenny Okolugbo, a Consultant on Communications and Strategy to the Senate President, described the reports as completely false and misleading. Speaking with Daily Post, Okolugbo dismissed the allegations outright, stating that the story was nothing more than “fake news.” He declined to provide additional details, maintaining that there was no truth to the claims being spread.
The denial follows a report by Sahara Reporters, which alleged that Akpabio collapsed on December 10 and was subsequently transported to London aboard a private jet reportedly provided by billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote. According to the publication, the Senate President was said to be receiving medical care abroad, a situation it claimed accounted for his absence from recent official engagements.
One of the events cited in the report was the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) session held last Wednesday, a critical legislative meeting focused on Nigeria’s fiscal planning. During that session, Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi reportedly presided in Akpabio’s stead, a development that drew attention and fueled speculation about the Senate President’s health.
An unnamed National Assembly source quoted in the report alleged that Akpabio had missed the MTEF presentation and further claimed that this was the second occasion he had been flown to London for medical treatment. The source suggested that these developments had raised concerns about Akpabio’s health status and his capacity to effectively lead the 10th Senate.
Despite the growing speculation, the Senate leadership has yet to issue a comprehensive official statement addressing the claims, aside from the brief but categorical denial issued by Akpabio’s media consultant. As of the time of this report, no evidence has been presented to substantiate the allegations, and the Senate President’s camp maintains that the story is entirely untrue.
