Human rights advocate and prominent lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to demonstrate the same level of resolve and military efficiency shown in halting the recent attempted coup in the Republic of Benin when addressing Nigeria’s deepening insecurity challenges.
In a statement released on Monday, Adeyanju commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their rapid and coordinated action in helping to safeguard democratic governance in the neighbouring West African nation. He also praised President Tinubu for providing the political will necessary for the intervention, which involved the deployment of Air Force fighter jets along with synchronized ground operations.
Adeyanju noted that Nigeria’s intervention not only prevented the overthrow of a legitimate government but also illustrated the country’s ability to play a stabilizing role within the region. According to him, the successful collaboration sends “a resounding warning to any group attempting to sabotage democratic systems in the Sahel.”
However, the activist stressed that the achievement would ring hollow if Nigeria fails to confront its domestic security threats with the same vigour. He emphasised that while the nation can project power beyond its borders, it must also demonstrate the capacity to secure lives and property at home.
His remarks come at a time when communities across the North-East, North-West, and North-Central continue to suffer from persistent insurgency, banditry, and violent crime. Despite ongoing military operations, many residents remain vulnerable to attacks from terrorist groups and armed criminals.
Adeyanju therefore urged President Tinubu to channel equal focus, urgency, and strategic planning toward resolving Nigeria’s internal security crisis. He argued that Nigerians deserve the same swift and decisive action that was mobilized to defend democracy in Benin, saying that true leadership is measured not only by regional influence but by the safety and stability provided to one’s own citizens.
