The Adamawa State Government has officially called off the Cross Over Night activities that were scheduled to take place on December 31 at the Unity Flyover in Jimeta, Yola, the state capital.
The announcement was made in a statement released on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Humwashi Wonosikou, and shared with members of the press. According to the statement, the decision followed careful consideration of prevailing security and safety concerns, with the government emphasizing that the protection of lives and property remains its foremost responsibility.
The statement confirmed that all events planned for the Cross Over Night celebration, spanning from December 31, 2025, to January 1, 2026, have been cancelled. Wonosikou explained that the government is prioritizing public safety and will not compromise on measures aimed at maintaining peace and order across the state.
He further noted that the state government would continue to collaborate closely with security agencies to ensure stability before, during, and after the festive period. Reiterating the administration’s stance, he stressed that safeguarding residents is non-negotiable and remains central to government policies and actions.
In addition, the government assured citizens that they would be promptly informed should there be any new developments regarding public events or security updates. As part of precautionary steps, residents—especially those living in Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas—were advised to remain alert, avoid large gatherings, and stay away from overcrowded locations.
The statement also urged members of the public to be proactive by reporting any suspicious movements or activities to relevant security authorities, noting that community cooperation is essential to maintaining peace and safety.
This development comes shortly after a similar decision by the Lagos State Government, which announced the cancellation of the 2025 Greater Lagos Fiesta earlier scheduled for December 31. The Lagos announcement was made through a statement issued on Tuesday by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, following the approval of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
According to the Lagos State Government, the annual celebration—popularly known as the Countdown to 2026—was replaced with a call for residents to dedicate the period to personal prayers. Governor Sanwo-Olu encouraged Lagosians to pray for the nation, the state, and its people, while also seeking divine guidance for peace, good leadership, prosperity, and overall well-being in the coming year.
While extending goodwill messages to residents as the year draws to a close, the Lagos governor expressed optimism about 2026, describing it as a year filled with promise for both Lagos State and Nigeria. He also urged citizens to continue living together in peace and harmony as they prepare for the new year.
